Scope:

A professional nurse who is a member of the nursing leadership staff. Primary
responsibility is supervision of all nursing personnel and nursing related functions on a specific shift. Duties involve assessing staffing and resident needs and
directing care. Works predominately with an adult geriatric population.


Responsibilities:

A. Clinical: Serves as role model for staff through provision of safe, effective and efficient nursing care. Supervises clinical aspects of nursing.

1. Demonstrates knowledge of Nursing Policies and Procedures.
2. Makes rounds on all units a minimum of four (4) times a shift to review resident needs.
3. Monitors implementation of nursing process on units through observation of nursing care given. Identifies deficiencies and communicates to NUM and other appropriate persons. Provides follow-up.
4. Resolves difficult clinical issues as necessary.
5. Responds to all emergency situations; utilizing sound judgment, makes decisions about management of such situations.
6. Serves as a resource person.
7. Identifies needs for development or revision of policy/procedure and takes appropriate action.
8. Interprets, implements, and supports facility and nursing service policy and procedure.
9. Participates in resident care as needed.

B. Leadership: Manages day to day operations of Nursing Department.

1. Abides by the standards identified in FutureCare’s Statement of Corporate Ethics and the Corporate Compliance Plan.
2. Participates in formulating goals for the department.
3. Investigates and identifies all relevant aspects of incidents, problems, and/or emergencies occurring on the shift. Communicates same to ADON and other appropriate persons.
4. Develops and implements an immediate plan for solution as appropriate based on needs and alternatives.
5. Arranges for adequate coverage through reassignment of staff as necessary.
6. Demonstrates knowledge of Fire and Safety plan.
7. Explains to others the legal ramifications of nursing actions and documentation.

C. Communications: Interfaces with others to insure efficient unit operations.

1. Identifies and communicates problems to appropriate persons and provides follow-up as necessary.
2. Receives and gives report verbally and in writing between tours of duty.
3. Maintains effective verbal communication in a professional manner with residents, families and other health team members.
4. Demonstrates effective listening skills.
5. Meets with DON on a regular basis. Provides written communication to the DON as required.
6. Maintains communication with Nurse Educator regarding educational needs of nursing staff.
7. Interacts with others in a considerate, helpful and courteous manner.

D. Professional Development: Seek opportunities for own growth and expansion of responsibilities to maintain clinical competency.

1. Utilizes a variety of resources to maintain clinical skills.
2. Attends meeting as directed at least 75% per year.
3. Actively participates as a member of the leadership group.
4. Participates in self-evaluation process by discussing with DON strengths, weaknesses, objectives and goals.
5. Presents neat appearance in appropriate dress and identification as required by the position.
6. Participates in educational and workshops/programs to increase professional competence and to meet professional goals. Attends 15 in-services yearly.
7. Shows evidence that information/skills obtained from above education experiences were used in modification of work environment.

E. Miscellaneous:

1. Provides facility with yearly nursing license.
2. Submits requests for time off per policy.
3. Performs other duties as assigned.
